East Suffolk and Ipswich

The East Suffolk service started in Ipswich in 2025. The team will be inviting eligible patients practice by practice. If you are aged between 55 to 74 and are a smoker or ex smoker you will receive an invite to attend the service.

What to expect

 If you are eligible, you will receive a letter or text message (when the site starts) inviting you for an initial Lung Health Check. 

The initial assessment will take place over the phone with a health professional. During the initial Lung Health Check, you will be asked some questions about your breathing, overall lung health, lifestyle and family and medical history. 

Based on your answers a risk assessment will be carried out and if your score means that you are at a higher risk of Lung cancer you will be invited to a face-to-face assessment with a Specialist Lung Health Check Nurse. 

At this appointment additional checks will be carried out and you will then normally be offered a low dose CT scan.

The scans will take place at Ipswich Hospital. 

The CT scanners at Ipswich are all sited on the Ipswich hospital site and within the Department of Diagnostic imaging. Patients’ are informed to enter the hospital building at the Outpatients entrance 6 and follow the signs to Diagnostic imaging, then CT scan.
