Clacton and Colchester sites are part of North East Essex.
Clacton started scanning in 2024 for patients aged between 55 and 74 who were smokers and ex-smokers. The site is currently carrying out repeat scans and inviting patients who have aged into the programme.
Colchester started scanning in April 2026 and will be inviting eligible patients practice by practice.
What to expect
If you are eligible, you will receive a letter or text message inviting you for an initial Lung Health Check.
The initial assessment will take place over the phone with a health professional. During the initial Lung Health Check, you will be asked some questions about your breathing, overall lung health, lifestyle and family and medical history.
Based on your answers a risk assessment will be carried out and if your score means that you are at a higher risk of Lung cancer you will be invited to a face-to-face assessment with a Specialist Lung Health Check Nurse.
At this appointment additional checks will be carried out and you will then normally be offered a low dose CT scan.
The scan will take place at the Community Diagnostic Centre in Clacton or at Colchester Hospital.
